Akamar Herald End of Year Three

Following the issue for Ray's turn which appears below, there is a gap in THE sequence of issues of the Akamar Herald.   This was due to a hard drive crash causing the loss of all the issues.   Fortunately Ray had kept copies of most of them.  Based on a later issue which also appears below, Ray, Gary, and John and Hal did not engage in any actions during the third year of the campaign.  More battles were fought during the fourth year and the accounts of those will be covered.

STATEMENT FROM AQUILA

MY LORDS OF VELA,

I have been directed by His Imperial Majesty, Tsar (not Czar) Ferdinand II, to inform you that Aquila intends to abide by The Truce and all commitments made by Prince Nicholas. Furthermore, both the government and the people of Aquila strongly condemn the recent, unprovoked, use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction (especially one involving Chemical Warfare) against the innocent people of Ketos. Nevertheless, it should be noted that neither the Pirate Rulers of Saiph and Syrma nor the Sorcerer of the Misty Isles ever indicated that they would abide by The Truce.

As such, the gravity of recent events has necessitated the early return of Tsar Ferdinand II from a much-needed sabbatical. Upon his return to actual power, and In the Interest of Peace, one of the Tsar's first acts was to order Dandarnab the Trader of Ketos to be expelled from Aquila. (He is suspected of plotting against the government of Ketos.)

THE ISLAND OF DELPHINOS

DELPHINOS IS DIVIDED BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES – SAIPH AND SYRMA.   BOTH ARE KNOWN MORE FOR THEIR COMMERCE RAIDING AND SMUGGLING THAN FOR ANYTHING ELSE.   THEY ARE JUST AS LIKELY TO BE AT EACH OTHER’s THROATS OR WORKING TOGETHER TO DOMINATE THE SEAS ALONG THE SOUTHERN COAST.   THE MAIN ITEMS EXPORTED FROM DELPHINOS ARE OLIVE OIL AND WINE.

THE GULF OF MIRFAK

THE GULF OF MIRFAK IS A HAVEN FOR PIRATES.  THERE ARE NUMEROUS ISLANDS IN THE GULF AND OFF THE SOUTHERN COAST OF DELPHINOS THAT THEY USE AS BASES.   MOST OF THEIR ILL-GOTTEN GAINS ARE SAID TO BE SOLD IN THE PORTS OF SAIPH OR SYRMA.

ARGOS

THE NAVY OF ARGOS IS PROBABLY THE BEST TRAINED AND EQUIPPED OF ALL THE COUNTRIES IN VELA.   THE ARGONAUT MARINES ARE EXPERIENCED IN AMPHIBIOUS OPERATIONS AND PIRATE SUPPRESSION.  ARGOS IS UNIGUE IN HAVING SUCH A MARINE FORCE.

PISCIS

IT IS SAID THAT THE STUDY OF PISCAN POLATICS WOULD TAKE MORE THAN ONE LIFETIME.  PISCIS IS COMPOSED OF SEVERAL CITY STATES, EACH WITH THEIR OWN KING.   IN ADDITION TO EACH CITY’S KING, THERE ARE SEVERAL POWERFULL NOBLE HOUSES.  POLITICAL ALLEGIANCES CAN CHANGE AT THE DROP OF A HAT AND NOBLES WHO SUPPORT ONE KING HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER AND THEN BACK TO THE FIRST WITHIN THE SPACE OF A MONTH.

KAELUM

THE CAPITAL CITY OF AKAMAR IS LOCATED AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE DSHUBBA AND RUKBAT RIVERS.   IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST CITIES IN VELA.   KAELUM CONTROLS A MAJOR SHARE OF THE TRADE BETWEEN THE WESTERN AND THE EASTERN PARTS OF VELA DUE TO THE FAIRLY FLAT NATURE OF ITS LAND.   THE ONLY OTHER EASY PASSAGE BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST IS ALONG THE SOUTH COAST.    AKAMAR IS KNOWN FOR ITS GREAT WEALTH AND IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE WALLED CITY.   ITS TEMPLES ARE CROWNED IN GOLD AND THE MID-DAY SUN’S REFLECTION CAN BE SEEN FOR MILES.   THE CITY HAS FEW RIVALS FOR ITS BEAUTY AND WEALTH.  TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH OF KAELUM RISE GREAT MOUNTAIN RANGES.   RUMORS OF LOST CIIES AND HIDDEN VALLEYS ABOUND IN THE MARKET PLACES AND OFTEN MAPS OF DUBIOUS VALUE CAN BE OBTAINED THERE.   APPARENTLY SOME OF THEM MAY BE REAL AS ALI ABUBU, A FORMER BEGGAR, WHO DISSAPPEARED FROM AKAMAR FOR A WHILE HAS RETURNED WITH ENOUGH WEALTH TO BUILD A SMALL PALACE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY.
