Due to the Covid virus Pacificon 2020 had been cancelled. Sadly, attendance was down from 2019. Several of the local gamers had gone to Enfilade instead this year. Normally, Enfilade is held on a different weekend from Pacificon, but this year it was held on the same weekend.

The miniature and board games were in the same room again, but the room was smaller than 2019. The number of games offered was also less than 2019. I ran two games, one on Saturday morning and the other on Sunday morning. In all there were about 24 people participating in the miniature games on Saturday. My Saturday game was Breitenfeld 1631 using Repent or Die from Hoplite Research. Sorry no pictures and an inconclusive result. I left early from the convention after my game to take care of some things at home.

My Sunday game was Blenheim 1704 using slightly modified Rank and File rules. The result was a French victory. Afterword I participated in the Panzer Korps WW2 game. I commanded the Germans with the aid of Keith against the two British players. Our units started out hidden and visibility was limited due to the Bocage terrain.

The British right flank force arrived first and was immediately thrown back. After regrouping they again attempted to advance. Meanwhile my ersatz tank destroyer unit had been sniping at them.

The British left flank force arrived on the second day segment (each day segment is two hours and can have 1-4 turns depending on die rolls). Their advance was also halted by infantry and our other ersatz tank destroyer unit. This unit also continued to cause problems for the British left flank for the remainder of the game. The British never saw it due to attempting to spot the wrong location. It was further away than where they were looking.

The British also had some offshore naval guns bombarding the area, but this fell on areas where our troops were not deployed.. We had deployed in depth with four infantry (panzergrenadier) battalions up front the two ersatz units behind them, and tank battalion and a nebelwerfer battalion further back.

We also had some anti-aircraft companies that were attached to various units. The one attached to my ersatz unit caused the British air strike to break off its attack. Time ran out with the British attack stalled and the Germans still holding all the game area that they had started with.

Below are photos of the Blenheim and Panzer Korps games.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; DBA and a modern armor game I ran using Lightning War - Red Storm.

LWRS is a free set of rules covering WW2 to present day and is available by joining https://groups.io/g/LWRS

Each element in LWRS represents about 15 vehicles or 150 men. About a company or a battalion of artillery. Units are multi-company battalions. Battalion units are grouped into brigade/regiment formations under a commander. With several brigades forming a division under a higher level commander. A player can handle a division.

Units are rated for five levels of quality, and four to five levels of equipment technology. Rated from a low of 1 to a high of 5. Formation and division commanders are also rated from 1 to 5 and can have a different rating from the units they command. With this rating system an early war PZIV would count as a class 4 heavy tank, but by the end of the war it might be only a class 2.

Instead of IGOYGO the game has an interactive activation sequence. Players roll a die for each formation. Priority is assigned from the highest score to the lowest. Starting with the highest score each player can choose to move immediately or pass and wait until later in the turn with the ability to interrupt the sequence at any point. If all the higher scores pass the lowest scoring formation is forced to move and the sequence is repeated until all formations have moved. Combat is then resolved with air strikes, followed by artillery, then direct fire and finally close assaults. Each phase is simultaneous and units can become disordered due to damage in any and all phases. Morale checks are made for losses or situations and units can become fatigued and whole formations become exhausted ending their offensive capabilities.

For this game the opposing sides were two fictional Latin American countries. The Peoples' Democratic Republic of La Cucaracha led by El Supremo Jefe Patronis and The Federal Union of Buena Vista ruled by President for Life, Elvis Narcisco. The PDRC uses Russian equipment and the FUBV uses German equipment.

As a side note, on YouTube there are several videos of Chiles annual military parade. Chile uses modern German equipment and has kept the Prussian military traditions. Units in historical Prussian uniforms take part in the parade and Prussian military music is played by the bands.

The game matched the first divisions of both nations in a meeting engagement and lasted a full day of six turns. Each turn is two hours long. The FUBV was starting to gain an advantage by the end of the day. This time it was an armored car company with a motorcycle infantry platoon. My objective was to either capture the bridge intact, dispute control of the bridge, or prevent the French from escaping across the river.

I was able to enter from any and all of the roads on my side of the river. The river was only crossable at the bridge. The French started in a village on the right end of the table on my side of the river. Upon assessing the situation, I realized that capturing or disputing control of the bridge would be suicidal so I determined to keep the French from escaping.

On my first move I sent my motorcycle platoon down the center road with the objective of capturing the building closest to the road junction on the other side of the railroad track. I had an extra initiative chit that I was going to use to accomplish this. My first two squads came under fire from the Belgian anti-tank guns and had to dismount and fall back, the LMG and the third squad were not affected, I then used my extra initiative chit and immediately moved the platoon again, getting everyone in the platoon into the building with the lmg and on squad on the second floor and the other two squads on the second floor.

The French had two armored car platoons, a truck borne infantry platoon, and a motorcycle infantry platoon. The truck infantry ran into the nearest building and the motorcycle infantry moved to the far side of that building. I then brought my light armored cars in from the two roads on the right losing one from Belgian anti-tank fire. The others caught the light armored cars from their rear and shot them up. During the game both sides could score a chance to earn an extra one use initiative chit if they eliminated an armored car or infantry squad. I was able to get two of them. The allies did not score any.

I brought my heavy armored cars, mortar and platoon commander on the same road as the motorcycles had arrived on, keeping them out of line of fire from the Belgian AT guns. Fighting for the town was intense. I lost two of the light armored cars and a squad of infantry while eliminating the five French armored cars and one of the infantry platoons. The mortar was very effective causing about 1/3 of the French casualties. The French were trapped in the town and were not able to escape.

The Belgians had placed explosives on the bridge, but could not detonate it until at least one French unit made it across the bridge.

Other games at the club that day were the Second Punic War battle of Illipa and a a Napoleonics game.

View of the river with the bridge and a bunker on the left.

The town the French started in

The arrival of my motorcycle infantry.

William Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12084322223324585325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4977576687898619950.post-10579823850642948612021-08-20T16:29:00.000-07:002021-08-20T16:29:09.041-07:00South Bay Game Club July Meeting
I participated in a WW2 game at the July SGBC meeting. It was set in 1940 with a recon company from Rommel's Panzer division running into some opposition from Belgian troops. The German objective was to capture the town on the other side of a stream. Intervening terrain was very dense with hills, woods, a stream, and a couple of buildings.

The Belgians blocked the road with some anti-tank obstacles and I had to dismount the motorcyclists and advance on foot. I had four infantry platoons and an LMG team. Rules were Fireball Forward.

While I managed to make good progress during the early part of the game, I made a couple of mistakes as I got too involved in the fighting on the right flank. I should have set the LMF up on the hill in the middle of the table so I could fire on the town and kept two of my four infantry platoons on the left half of the table instead of concentrating three of them on the right.

I managed to clear all the opposition on the right, but ran out of turns before I could assault the town. The Belgians had two infantry platoons, two MG teams, and two mortar teams. By the end of the game they only had one infantry platoon left and the two MG;s I had lost a couple of infantry squads out of the twelve I started with. The result was a marginal victory for the Belgians.

The view from my end of the table

There were several other games that day. This is mainly
designed for space fighters, but also includes rules for large ship actions.
There are some YouTube videos for the game.

I decided to convert the ships from
the Game Designers Workshop board game "Star Cruiser". While out of print the
game is available from WargameVault or DriveThruRPG as a PDF file.
Star Cruiser is a very hard science space combat rule system. There are quite a few similarities to the ship
combats and weapon systems in David Weber's Honor Harrington series. Although, the FTL drives are
different as are the story backgrounds. In addition to the background history the game includes a good variety of ships for the different protagonists in the setting.
There is also a ship design manual if you want to design your own ships. The
process of designing a ship is very extensive with items like the power plant,
life support, crew accommodations, weapons, sensors, etc. Fortunately, someone
made an excel spread sheet where all you have to do is plug in the various items
and just add as many hull sections as are needed to hold all the internal
components and have space on the outer hull for the sensors, weapons, and other
surface mounts. I used it to design a ship similar to the later designs of the
HonorVerse. Most ships in the game could only launch one or two missiles per
turn. The one I designed could launch 36 at once.

I have designed my own background setting, "human space", for the space and ground combat games I have
played. There are several posts on this blog with photos of the various ships,
etc. These can be viewed by clicking on the labels for this post. The main human
factions are the Panthari Imperium, The Domain, and the Federated Worlds or
Federation. There are also a few dozen independent human worlds and some alien
races. One of the alien races is aggressive xenophobes known as the "Blue
Meenees" for their skin color and their high pitched screeching communications.
Little is known about them other than the general direction their ships seem to
be coming from.

In order to convert the Star Cruiser ships I needed to divide most of the weapons and some other items by six to determine how many of each to
place on a ship for StarFighters. Shields and armor ratings were only divided by
three. Others systems like scanners, life support, crew accomadations,
powerplant volume, etc. were ignored. Movement rates were adjusted to match the
Star Cruiser values. This meant that ships moved a bit slower than the
StarFighter rule book. I also made a slight modification to the ion cannon
statistics and the lasers. This involved a bit of mathematical calculations. In
the rules Ion cannons take of two spaces, cause two units of damage, can only be
fired every other turn, and have a range of 2/3 the lasers. Since the caused
equal damage as a medium laser the calculation was half the availability
multiplied by two-thirds of the range resulting in a value of one-third the
number of spaces that a medium laser would occupy. Since a medium laser occupies
two spaces this would be two-thirds of a space on the ship. By increasing the
damage from two to three an Ion cannon would occupy a full hull space, have two
thirds the range, and only be available every other turn. This makes them more
effective for the game, though ships equipped with them have to get closer than
those with lasers. The rules for lasers were also modified to have them function
as both an offensive weapon to attack other ships with and as point defense
systems to destroy attacking enemy fighters and missiles. In theory ion cannons
could also be used as a point defense system. However, if they have been used
offensively previusly then they cannot do so and if they are used as a point
defense then they would not be able to fire offensively. If a ship is being
attacked by enemy fighters or missiles each point defense weapon that can fire
into the arc that the attackers are in may engage one target defensively during
the enemy attack. Firing arcs were also changed to a full 180 degrees from the
45 degrees in the rules. Firing arcs being determined from the cener post of the
ship's mounting stand.

The following are the statistics for the ships of the various factions. IC is ion cannon, L is light laser, ML is medium laser, M is missile, FB is a fighter
bay, S is shield, A is armor, ATC is Advanced Tactical Computer (aids in
targeting), RB is repair bot. Laser and Ion cannon firing arcs are denoted by F
for forward, P for port, and S for starboard. Damage is the number of damage
hits the ship can sustain (40% of hull spaces). If there is an F next to the
movement rate then it is a fast ship. (X) indicates a hull space used for the
fast movement ability or the second space for a medium laser.

Pantharii Imperium (and yes, they are the pink Panthari. large, heavily armored and shielded ships. They do not have fighter carriers.
There also tend to be fewer missiles and beam weapons than most comparable human
sized ships. Examination of a destroyed Alpha found a mix of technologies that
were both more advanced than and inferior than human technology. What appeared
to be living quarters were very Spartan compared to those for human crews. Ship
designations are based on the Greek alphabet. Alphas and Betas were the first
two ship types encountered along with the fighters being designated Gammas. The
massive Deltas and the differently designed (compared to the other ship types) Epsilons
were encountered later. The third S and A values are redundant values for the
StarFighter rules. They do not add any additional saving and eliminating one of
each will not reduce their save. That is, a second shield space would have to
be eliminated to reduce heavy shields to light shields.

The South Bay Gaming Club is holding meetings at the church again and The Miniature Wargaming Society of Sacramento had a meeting at The Game Castle hobby shop in Sacramento. The community room at the Charmical library where they used to meet is still not available for public use.
The Game Castle had a 40K tournament last Sunday so the club was limited to three games. Two were in the private rooms and one was at a table in the main gaming area. There were a lot of well painted 40K miniatures being used in the tournament with at least two dozen players.
The three games were Command and Colors Napoleonics hosted by Roger, DBA hosted by John, and Blitzkrieg Commander 2nd edition hosted by Keith. I participated in the BKC game commanding the Russians in the river crossing scenario vs Mike as the German player. The setting was late war about early 1945. The river had four crossing points two fords and two bridges. There was minimal terrain with no high ground, several woods, and several fields. The bridges were in the middle with a ford near each flank.
I decided to have one force threaten the left ford and bridge, a second force threaten the two bridges, and the third force at the right ford. Mike was not as experienced with the rules and didn't realize that vehicles could not fire and move. His overall deployment was good otherwise with a strong force hidden in the wood protecting the ford on my right, another in the woods guarding the ford on the left, a third force in the woods between the two bridges, and some Tiger IIs and a Jagdtiger guarding the bridges.
I was able to get mutiple activations on the first couple of turns, moving and then firing. Though I took some loses from opportunity fire and for a while Mike had the advantage in losses caused, I was eventually able to turn his flank on my right as I came across the ford. My left and center forces concentrated on taking out enemy units on my left and right as my right flank force came across the ford and the bridge in the center right. Eventually Mike's loses caused him to take a check for exceeding his brak point. Though he passed is position was now untenable and he conceded the game.
I didn't take any pictures of the game, but Roger posted one picture of his Napoleonic game on the club's Groups.io forum

sci-fi IFV's and tanks. I could have done quite a bit more, but spent the later
part of the year doing things other than wargaming.

This year I will be working
on the items that were not completed. The 6mm warbands and the pine forest are
the lowest priority at the moment. The 6mm built up areas, two foot square
interlocking terrain mats, and the remaining 28mm fantasy have the higher
priority.

This was our first game with the rules and we made a few mistakes, though nothing major. The game was set in the sixth century A.D. with Byzantines vs Sassanid Persians. The Byzantines had six cavalry units and nine infantry units. The cavalry was bow and javelin armed while the infantry had some units of mixed archers and spear, a couple of units of heavy archers and three units of heavy spear. All were regulars.

The Sassanids had two cataphract units, three units of light bow and spear armed cavalry, three units of spear armed infantry, two units of mixed spear and bow infantry, and five archer units. The cataphracts were regulars, the light cavalry and mixed spear/bow were tribal, and the rest irregulars. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the elephants so the Sassanids were missing one of their better troop types.

During the course of the game the Byzantines had better die throws and broke or eliminated over half the Persian units. The Persians were only able to eliminate two of the Byzantine infantry units. One of them disappeared in spectacular fashion when it engaged a Persian unit and both side eliminated the other with their close combat die rolls.

All units on both sides were eight figures strong. I only took one decent picture during the game. It is posted below with the Byzantines at the top and the Sassanids at the bottom.

William Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12084322223324585325noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4977576687898619950.post-78014374122021658012020-08-31T09:25:00.001-07:002020-08-31T09:25:15.263-07:00August Projects
During August I worked on completing the remaining 25mm Science Fiction items that had not been done. These included assembling the buildings I got from PaperTerrain. I also purchased some aliens as noted in the previous blog post and found a tank and an infantry carrier at Wargame Vault. I needed different vehicles for the forces opposing the Federation.

The vehicles are made by Tomoko's paper miniatures. He also has 2d 28mm soldiers. However, the vehicles are definitely not 28mm. Fortunately I was able to use Paintshop Pro to enlarge them to 143% of their original size which made them compatible with my 25/28mm figures. The PDF file has several different camo schemes. All of them in shades of grey except for the one I chose to use. The infantry carrier appears to be an M113 APC. I haven't checked it against the actual vehicle to verify if it is an exact copy or not. I added the original sized turret from the tank model to convert it into an IFV. Instead of using the paper tube mounting system for the turrets I again went with thumbtacks glued to the inside of the turret with a strip of cardstock glued across the top of the thumbtack and to the turret floor to keep the thumbtack in place. The only other modification was to cut the bottom of the track assembly as a wider straight edge instead of the jagged pattern making them easier to assemble. The files include detailed assembly diagrams unlike the free ones that I made for the Federation.

The buildings from PaperTerrain were also PDF files and include detailed assembly instructions and diagrams. The number of buttresses, bays, windows, and door openings can be customized as desired.

The following photos show the buildings and vehicles. The miniatures are from Grenadier Models, Inc. They are the licensed Traveler Imperial Marines Imperial Marines. They are being used as the Pantharii Impeium Marines. I believe Magister Militum has the molds, but has not recast them as of this time. In addition to the marines I also bought a set of the adventurer figures back when they were released. In addition to the sets of marines, I recently purchased some additional figures that were not part of a complete set that I found on Ebay. |Fortunately no one else bid against me and I was able to get them for about $2 per figure. Otherwise, there were a few complete boxed sets being offered at $120 to $160 per set. I now have about three dozen of them for a complete platoon.

Again these will be used for Wiley Games Galactic Heroes and Bigger Battles.

The four IFV's, one of the tanks, and some of the Pantharii Imperium Marines.

Comparison of the Pantharii and Federation IFV's

Two of the PaperTerrain buildings. I had looked at the Ralnai and Klackon ranges for Starguard, but decided against them. Last week, I was browsing through Khurasan Miniatures 15mm sci fi range and found what I was looking for. These were the Soriog.

They are slightly shorter than the 28mm sci fi figures. I placed the order on Monday and they arrived on the Saturday. Kudos to Khurasan for speedy delivery. For their environmental suits, I painted them light khaki, and used a medium brown for their weapons. They were given a bright blue skin color for their faces and other parts of their warlock (a psionic). The humans refer to them as the "blue meenees". They have a prehensile tail, hands with a thumb and two fingers, and a raptor talon on their legs.

Wiley games printed a book of various sci fi races and I chose the Aeldarin for their characteristics. These are based on not-space elves.

The figures are organized into four squads of ten. Consisting of a squad leader, seven other laser rifle armed infantry, a heavy laser, and a flamer. There is four figure command team consisting of the commander, a warlock, and two junior officers.

The four squads with the command team in front.

The command team. Play follows the usual procedure of the Fistful of Lead series of games. Several examples of play can be found on YouTube by searching for Fistful of Lead: Galactic Heroes or other rule titles that Wiley Games has published.

They are fairly simple rules to play, but are a lot of fun. Don't expect a hard science type of game like Starcruiser. Some players are thinking of adapting them to airplane combat. In addition to the light, medium, and heavy fighters there is a section for including larger ships as part of the fighter combat game.

One thing I had not expected was a section in the later part of the rules for fleet actions using frigates on up through battleships. Fighters still play a part in a fleet battle, but they operate as a flight of six fighters and only engage in close quarters combat against the larger ships and other fighters.

One of the members of the Wiley Games Facebook group recently posted a report on a fleet action game he played and it looked like a good alternative to Starcruiser. As such, I am adapting the ship specifications for the Pantharii Imperium, Domain, Federation, and others to Starfighter specifications. this has been done by dividing the number of weapon batteries, missiles, and damage repair teams by six and shields and armor levels by three. While the design methods are entirely different I was able to convert all the ships directly to different specifications except for the Federation BCG300 class battle cruisers. These would have required at least 30 spaces just for the missile load they carry and resulted in a ship with 40 spaces which is way beyond the levels of the game.
Ships of the Domain. Top and bottom rows are three frigates, Second and fourth rows have a battle cruiser on the left followed by two cruisers. The middle row is led by a cruiser on the left, the battleship which also serves as the fleet command ship, a fighter carrier, and another frigate at the right end. The carrier has eight flights of fighters and the battleship carries another two flights. The entire fleet totals 166 spaces. Currently the Pantharii Imperium fleet totals 106 spaces and will be adding a fighter carrier for another 16 spaces. Three additional cruisers and two more frigates will match their total to the Domain's. this will give them two battleships, seven cruisers, six frigates, and a carrier. Both fleets will have sixteen ships and ten fighter flights..

The alien marauders. Two class A ships on the left and two class B ships. They total 52 spaces. I need to find some ships that can fill in for the class D and Class E ships.

I plan on running a solo game or two pitting the Federation against the Domain to see how the game plays. The BCG300's will either be ships with 15 spaces and six missiles or ships with 20 spaces and eleven missiles. A few modifications to the rules to bring them slightly closer to how things are in Starcruiser will also be tested. These are doubling the missile movement to 24 inches, increasing the firing arc for turrets to 180 degrees except through the rear of the ship, allowing two single shot laser batteries per ship to double as point defense systems and function like the defense drones against missiles and fighters, and reducing standard ship movement to six which is the normal movement rate for most ships in Starcruiser. Slow ships in Starcruiser move at a velocity of three. Hopefully these modifications will not upset the game balance.

These are free items from the website mentioned in previous posts.

I added five more buildings to the previous two that I made. They come in three different sidings - brick, planks, and panels and a variety of colors. The panels consist of six with windows, two with ventilators/chimneys, and six solid that can be arranged in any order desired of twelve panels. They also have a doorway and up to three dormers that can be added. I made the two buildings with panels into a combined structure by adding the extra part provided for joining buildings together. I left the bottom of the buildings open so that I can stack them and save storage space.

Now I am waiting for an order of business signs from Iliada Game Studio that I will be adding to various buildings that I have already made and some additional ones that I will be making that I just purchased from PaperTerrain. These were announced back in March and are available already printed or in PDF format. One of the sets includes three buildings that can be joined together or used separately. He also has a wall and gate set and a set of storage containers. The picture is from his website. I purchased the tower, the two story building next to it, the three stall market building next that and the three building combination in the lower ;right, along with the gate and wall set. The tower and the individual buildings occupy about a six in square area as to the three modules in the combination set. Except for the tower, each set includes exterior wall panels, buttresses, doors and bays that can be placed as desired or left off. It appears that one of the wall sections has been shortened next to the gate in the lower right of the picture. The sets look to be easy and quick to assemble.

The last picture is of the repair vehicles and bots, a pair of forklifts, and a couple of accumulators. The vehicles and bots can be printed in different color sets if desired. I chose to use the yellow set. The repair vehicles consist of a control vehicle, two tool chests and an open trailer.
There is another unit of heavy infantry to paint along with half a unit of elf light infantry and another half unit of human light infantry. These will be done at a later date while I work on some other projects. These figures were all primed and the Black Guard was finished a while back. Front row from left to right two units of human archers, one unit of elf crossbowmen. Back row from left to right a unit of heavy infantry (most of the figures are from the Battle Masters game) the Black Guard, another unit of heavy infantry, and a unit of elf spearmen. The Black Guard has their weapons, shield designs, and other metal items highlighted with antique gold. This doesn't show up too well in the picture, but there is a out of focus closeup of them in the third picture down in the Battle of Rabid Rabbits Rapids report here
I am still doing some painting, but I am not spending as much time doing so as I previously had.

For the past week and a half I have been assembling some tanks and IFV's for my 28mm science fiction figures. These are from the free website that I previously mentioned. free items I had to use Paintshop Pro and import the camo scheme from ones that I previously made. This took a couple of days to complete.

The models are better than the other one I had made, but the directions could use a couple of additional diagrams to help with assembling them. They include a variety of detail parts and choice of weapons for the IFV and secondary armament for the tank. I chose to use the smaller remote controlled turret for the IFV and chose the auto-cannon for it. The tank also has a remote controlled turret, but I decided to not use it due to its large size. I also added thumbtacks to the turrets to allow them to be rotated. and also made some other minor modifications to the locations of items on the tank turret and the IFV turret location.

I did post a picture of some of the figures in a previous post. See previous post They are from Anvil Industries. These were available in a set called the Martian Orbital Fusiliers under their regiments range. I purchased three of the 10 figure sets along with a six man heavy weapons set and a five man command set in order to get the free shipping. Purchasing the two additional sets of 10 figures reduced the cost per set by four UK pounds.

This set of figures is no longer listed,, but all the parts to make the figures are still listed on their site. These include the Gothic Void helmet, and torsos (the specialist weapon guy has the plain back and the rest have the standard back), armored legs and arms, and the Tesla disintegrator under the rifles with stocks range.

After priming them with white spray primer, I painted the figures with a rough wash of a bluish grey color to give them a similar camo pattern to the vehicles. The wash left different parts of the figures with dark, medium, and light patches.

The complete force. Three tanks, four IFV's, one command squad with 11 figures and four ten man squads. The ten man squads have a two man ATGM team, two team leaders with rifles, and six riflemen. The command squad has 11 men armed with rifles. This gives me 15 units and a commander for Wiley Games Bigger Battles rules. These are for the Federation armed forces. One of several factions of the Human Space setting which also includes the Panthari Imperium and the Domain.

Close-up of the ten man squad. The missile team is in the top right corner, The heavy weapons man is just to the left of the figure at the top center. One of the two team leaders is at left center and the other is cut off at the right center. The multi-part figures allow a variety of poses. While there are some similar poses in the four squads they are all have minor differences.

Two of them had to be primed. Though I used a grey spray primer, it was not the right shade of grey and I had to paint all the figures with Charcoal Grey from Howard Hughes.. This batch went quickly as there were only seven other colors that I used. Where I could I did paint some teeth and tongues There are two units of spearmen in the back row, two units of archers in the front row and one unit of javelin armed skirmishers in the center of the front row.. I will be starting on the next part tomorrow.
Two units were already finished and a third was almost done, but there were three infantry units and one mounted unit that needed to be primed. All the rest of was just primed. As of this morning I completed the one that was almost done, primed and finished the unprimed mounted unit and completed three other units. The other unit that was already finished will be included with the other units of the same type.
The elf cavalry is organized as eight units of eight figures each. While most of the horses were almost finished the riders needed to have their armor repainted to match the heavy infantry. Six of the units are on partly armored horses and two are on unarmored horses. The army's units equipment and organization is based on the Maurikian Byzantine reforms. The cavalry has lances and bows.

The figures are all plastic and were purchased years ago at much less cost than the current offerings from Games Workshop. While most of the figures I have were made or designed by GW there are several from other figure makers. This is the last of three posts. Clicking on older post will go directly to the previous post. The first post also has links in it to the dwarf army and human army units.
I will either base the extra 14 figures as an understrength unit or add a couple of extra heavy infantry figures to bring it up to 15 figures. These figures required more work as they were just primed. I have ordered some plastic glue from Amazon so that I can make needed repairs to some figures and add standards to two of these units. I will be flocking bases later.
These are the set called "Bigger Battles and are intended for larger scale skirmish games where units of 5 to `12 figures are used instead of individual figures. This inspired me to dig out my 28mm figures that I had started a while back and finish painting them.

The first batch is the Elf heavy infantry. The next batch will be the Elf light infantry, followed by the elf cavalry, and finally special figures like heroes and mages. I had originally started painting these a while back and then decided to change the color scheme. This group of figures was about 1/4 to 1/3 completed prior to working on them this past week. The Elf heavy infantry is organized as eight units of 16 figures. The color scheme is green and yellow uniforms and equipment with red weapons and silvered and gold armor. I need to get a tube of plastic glue to fix a few missing spear points on several figures. Edit: This is the first of three blog posts the other two follow directly by clicking on the newer post at the bottom of the page.

Shields were made from scans of shield patterns that I had and resized and reshaped as ovals in addition to the circular ones using PaintShop Pro. I did not want to use the original shield shape and patterns supplied by Games Workshop. The new shields are printed on heavy card stock and glued to the figures. Most of the shield patterns are sort of floral in design. The guard infantry unit has a white Pegasus on a pale blue background and one unit has an altar with a central flame.
The figures are all from the Baccus 6mm Sassanid Persian line. Currently no one makes all the figures needed for Early and Maurikian Byzantine armies. However, by adding shields and paint, I was able to convert the Sassanid cavalry to close approximations of the Byzantine counterparts.

I was able to locate a set of 3mm and 1.5mm paper hole punches. 2mm would have been a better size for the Byzantine shields and with the 1.5mm punch being too small I used the 3mm punch. I had hoped to use Paintshop Pro to reduce the late Roman shield patterns from the Notitia Dignitatum, but they were too detailed and did not print correctly. I ended up just printing red on cardstock and punching out the shields that I glued to the figures.

The Sassanids are on the left and the Byzantines are on the right. There are 180 armored horse archers in the back, 180 lance and bow cavalry and 18 command figures. The Byzantines have 144 lance and bow cavalry on unarmored horses in the back, 144 armored horse archers in the middle, 72 lance and bow cavalry on partly armored horses in the front, and 8 command figures. I have other command figures for the Byzantines also, but those are from a while back. The 72 figures on the partly armored horses were in a previous post. I will be adding flock to the unfinished bases later today.

I was painting these figures throughout the month while taking breaks to paint the Achaemenids and NKE's.
The Achaemenid cavalry that I finished earlier this month are here
and the New Kingdom Egyptian army is here

The total figures painted for this month are 923 mounted, 677 foot and chariot crewmen, 30 chariots, and 60 chariot horses.
I did have armies composed of figures from Heroics and Ros, but sold them to another club member a while back. I would have kept them, but the figures were based on outdated information. Currently only Baccus makes updated figures for Sassanid Persians. Unfortunately they do not make Early Byzantine or Maurikian Byzantine figures. However, with a bit of painting and adding shields to the armored horse archers and the lancers on unarmored horses the figures will pass for Byzantines.

The following pictures are of the 180 Sassanid Persian armored horse archers and the 72 Byzantine cavalry on partially armored horses. I still have 180 armored lancers to paint for the Sassanid Persians, 144 armored horse archers for the Byzantines, and 144 lancers on unarmored horses for the Byzantines.

To distinguish the Byzantines from the Sassanid the Byzantine cavalry will have iron armor for the partially armored horses while the Sassanids will have bronze armor for their horses. I also gave the Byzantine cavalry red standards and shields while the Persian standards and shields will be in multiple colors. I did try reducing and printing shields from the Notitia Dignitaum, but the images would not print clearly.
They are from the four different sets of Achaemenid cavalry made by Baccus 6mm. There should have been a total of 180 figures, but six of them were from some other nation.
The option of the contest is to paint as many of unpainted figures as possible.

Today I completed one of the painting projects that I am working on this month. The army has three "divisions representing the Amun, Re, and Suktekh divisions. Each division was given a specific color to differentiate them. These are red, yellow, and blue. In addition to the three main formations there is the Pharaoh in front center, two additional commanders, two units of guard infantry and one unit of Nubian archers.

Each Division has four units of archers, two units of close order fighters, one unit of Nubian archers, one unit of light infantry and 9 units of chariots. The middle chariot in the front row is the division commander. There are 176 infantry figures in each division, 18 charioteers plus one standard bearer, 18 horses and the 9 chariots.

The guards have 64 figures plus the 16 Nubians The Pharaoh and commanders have 12 figures and
one mounted scout plus the chariots and horses. Total figures painted for this army is 678 figures, 61 horses, and 30 chariots. Except for the Pharaoh, who I purchased from Baccus, all figures are from Rapier Miniatures.
They have a variety of items available. So far I have assembled some trucks, cargo items and several buildings.

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UtbEDnZr-Pg/XoTrTSijfGI/AAAAAAAAD8k/iquOf5pPAeo3sUG57MPIAPUqt6_h9p18QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200401_091006.jpg" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: #0066cc; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; orphans: 2; text-align: center; text-decoration: underline; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"><strike></strike>
<strike></strike>
The trucks are one of the vehicles available. They can be printed in four different colors and each has a choice of four different loads - Water, Fuel, Open, and Covered. The chassis are all the same consisting of the main frame, cab cover, four re-enforcements, six interior wheel parts, and two additional parts. The different payloads can be the same color as the chassis or can be different. The open truck is carrying most of the boxes.

There are a lot of other vehicles, including drop ships, and a freight hauling spaceship. The buildings I have assembled so far are the water tower, wind powered generator, solar panel, a pair of storage tanks, a landing pad, a greenhouse, a storage shed, and two of the habitats. The habitats have three different types of sidings and each type is available in four or five colors with a total of seven different colors. The farm set has an additional habitat in one of the siding types with a different color pattern. This gives a total of fourteen different color and siding combinations. I left the bottoms off of the habitats so that they can be stacked. Each habitat is assembled with twelve panels has six solid side panels, six window side panels, and two chimney panels to choose from. These can be arranged in any order. Additional items that can be added are the door, up to three dormers, and if desired a part to connect multiple habitats together.
I still have five of the habitats to assemble, ten service droids with four small parts vehicles, and a few additional items from the farm set. There are some other vehicles I am thinking of printing and assembling and am still undecided about making the cargo spaceship. There are eleven different versions of the spaceship to choose from and the model has a total of 42 pages of parts to print.

All the items that I have printed and assembled so far are fairly easy to assemble and fit together very well. While not any particular brand the cargo trucks and some of the vehicles could be used for present day 28mm skirmish games. Form on the Admiral's wake (age of sale0 rung by Bob, American War of Independence in 54mm run by nick, WW2 air run by Chuck, and a fictional modern armor game run by me.

This was the battle of Salon de Companerismo had the Union Federal de Buena Vista first division fighting the first division of the Republica Democratica Popular de la Cucaracha. The UFBC first division had three combat brigades and one divisional artillery brigade. The combat brigades had one brigade with two tank battalions, two puma battalions, an engineer battalion and one artillery battalion, one brigade with one tank battalion, three puma battalions, one engineer battalion, and an artillery battalion, and one brigade with three boxer battalions and an engineer battalion. The divisional artillery brigade had three MRL battalions and one AA battalion.

The RDOC had a brigade with three tank battalions, one BMP battalion, and an raillery battalion. The second brigade had two tank battalions, two BMP battalions and one artillery battalion. The third and fourth brigades had one tank battalion, one BMP battalion, two BTR80a battalions and one artillery battalion. The divisional artillery brigade had three artillery battalions, one MRL battalion, and one AA battalion.

The rules used were Lightning War - Red Storm, which are available for free from LWRS group.io We did use some house rules for the game as we kept the ground scale to one kilometer per 10cm (four inches) instead of the recommended doubling for the modern period and changed the quality ratings by increasing them by 5 and using a roll of two dice instead of a single die roll for activating formations. The table was 24km square.
At the start of each turn two six side dice were rolled for each brigade and any modifiers are added. For this scenario there were none. Both sides were rated as good with a rating of 8 for all units except the RDPC artillery brigade. which was fair with a rating of 7 The die roll is used to determine the order of activation for each combat formation (brigades for this game). The score for each of the formations on both sides determines the order of movement for the turn. The highest score can move first or choose to move later in the turn. This gives the higher scores an advantage over lower scores as they can choose to move when it is to their best advantage. The next higher score now has a choice of moving or deferring their move to later also. The same applies to each formation in turn and can force the formation with the lowest score to move first. This process is repeated until all formations have moved.

Indirect fire is then resolved followed by direct fire. It is possible for artillery fire to disorganize a formation which would then cause it to only fire with half its combat factors. Artillery fire is not guaranteed as the unit calling the fire has to roll equal to or less than the artillery formations quality rating and calling divisional artillery has an additional negative modifier applied to its rating. Artillery fire is very good at disorganizing units, but causing casualties on armored units is difficult due to the save modifiers. Infantry in built up areas can also be very difficult to cause casualties on.

The UFBV used march and road movement to move quickly forward and gain a positional advantage over the RDPC. At first casualties were very light. The RDPC was advancing from the east and managed to occupy the town on the south center edge of the battle field. The UFCV advanced towards that town and prepared to storm it with a pair of infantry battalions. Artillery and direct fire had disorganized the DRPC defenders. If the UFBC could roll high enough for initiative on the next turn the two battalions would be able to move first and assault the defenders before they were able to recover from disorganization. They were able to do so and their assault drove the defenders from the town.
Attacks by the RDPC to the south of that town were halted and driven back In the center part of the table UFBV artillery and direct fire badly damaged another couple of RDPC battalions.

On the northern flank neither side was making much progress. Artillery and direct fire from a Leopard 2 tank battalion damaged another BTR battalion.

Combat had taken a full rules day of six turns. Both sides paused for the night and combat resumed in the early morning of the next day. At this point UFBV artillery and direct fire took a toll on RDPC units. By the end of turn eight the two RDPC brigades on the southern half of the table had two exhausted battalions with possibly more by the end of the next turn. It was judged a UFBV victory. We had played for about four hours with a short lunch break included.
End of turn five. RDPC tanks would occupy the hill in the left center and their infantry would occupy the town to the left of it. UFBV infantry would advance up the road towards the town and the tank battalion on the road in the right center would advance through the town in the bottom center then deploy above it.

We have tried several different rule sets including Fistful of Tows, Spearhead, Cold War//Blitzkrieg Commander and others. These played the fastest of all of them and were easy to comprehend and use. The rules are available for free from https://groups.io/g/LWRS
